Secure Server Certificates

Why a secure server cert is needed.

Normally when information is entered into a form on a web site, it is sent in plain unencrypted text form to the server hosting the web site. Where information security is not very important, this is fine. However as it is (technically) possible to intercept internet communications between browser and server, this method is not good enough for sending sensitive information such as passwords or credit card details. SSL encryption is a secure method of transmitting sensitive information in encrypted form so that it cannot be decoded by an eavesdropper even if intercepted. You can tell when SSL is enabled by the lock symbol appearing in the status bar of your internet browser.

A SSL secure server cert is required to enable SSL transactions on your web site. As well as providing the encryption key for encoding the transmission, the cert also contains information about the authenticity of the website, indicating who owns the site and where the site owner is physically located.

Where to get a secure server certificate ?

Irish Domains are an authorised Thawte reseller
Because of our volume discounts, we can supply the entire range of genuine Thawte certification products cheaper than you could get them from Thawte directly. Pricing starts from only €99 for a basic 128-bit SSL123 certificate that can be issued and installed on your hosting account the same day.

You can obtain your SSL certificate by calling our sales line at the number above.

What is needed to get a secure server certificate ?

In the first instance you need to have a domain name and an SSL capable web hosting account. To apply for a SSL certificate, you must generate a public/private key pair, and a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). If you are hosted on an Irish Domains server, this is generated automatically by our control panel software, otherwise you need to follow the particular instructions for the type of server you are using.

Once you have your CSR, you can apply for a certificate by calling our sales line at the number above. As some types of SSL certificates are also a form of identity assurance, you may need to provide documentation establishing the exact legal status of your organization, and your rights to the domain name in question, but often this is not necessary if you register the domain name directly with us.

Certificates are normally issued the same working day (once all relevant documentation has been supplied). If you have a hosting account with Irish Domains, then we will install the certificate for you, otherwise it will be delivered by email. Once installed, your site is capable of SSL operation.

What type of cert do I need, and how much does it cost?

We provide three types of SSL certificate. All certs are fully 128-bit which enables the highest level of encryption. Thawte certs can be issued for one or two years.
